Security Alarm

How to activate and configure the motion-based security alarm, including grace periods, silent mode, and alarm sound features.

Written by Ipti Niskala

Not available in outdoor mode. The security alarm and motion graphs are not supported on M3 sensors installed in outdoor mode.

How the alarm works

The security alarm uses the Minut sensor's built-in motion detection to alert you when unexpected movement is detected in your rental unit. When motion is detected and the alarm is armed, the sensor siren sounds and all team members with access to the unit receive a push notification.

Motion detection area

Approximately 25 m² (269 ft²); a 2.5 m radius at 2.4 m ceiling height

Detection delay

Approximately 45 seconds between each detectable motion event

Siren duration

Up to 2 minutes if the alarm is not dismissed

Who is notified

All team members, admins, and owners with access to the rental unit

Dismiss method

Tap Dismiss alarm in the app, or press the main button on the sensor to mute the siren locally

Activation modes

  • With grade period (recommended)

The alarm triggers after a countdown you set, for example 30 seconds or 1 minute after motion is first detected. This gives you or your guests time to disarm before the siren sounds.

    Configured in Noise Presets.

  • Instantly - no grace period

The siren sounds immediately when motion is detected. Uses more battery. Also enables real-time motion graph updates, useful when you need to monitor activity without delay. Activated per unit from the property screen.

Use a grace period in most cases. Instant activation increases battery drain noticeably and leaves no time to disarm if you or a team member enters the property. A 30–60 second grace period suits most properties.

Motion Graph

The motion graph shows motion events over time for your rental unit. Each bar represents the number of motion events detected within a 15-minute window. The horizontal axis shows the time of day; the vertical axis shows the number of motion events.

Motion is tracked continuously even when the alarm is disarmed. This means you can review motion history without needing the alarm to be active, giving you a picture of activity in the unit without needing cameras.

Real-time graph updates require instant activation. When the alarm is set with a grace period, the motion graph updates approximately once per hour. With instant activation, motion events appear without delay.

Additional alarm features

  • Silent alarm: receive motion alerts without triggering the siren. Useful for discreet monitoring during stays.

  • Scheduled alarm: automatically arm or disarm the alarm at set times. Useful for cleaning windows, maintenance visits, or night-time-only monitoring. See Scheduled alarm

  • Glass break detection: the sensor can detect the sound of breaking glass and send a push notification. Enable in unit settings.

  • Alarm recognition: the sensor detects sounds that match security system or fire alarm patterns and notifies you. If your specific alarm sound is not recognised, send a sample to hello@minut.com for the team to review.

Dismissing an alarm

When an alarm triggers, any team member with access to the unit can dismiss it in the app. Tap the notification or open the unit in the app and tap Dismiss alarm. Once dismissed, the sensor stops sounding and the situation is considered resolved.

If your phone battery is dead when an alarm triggers, you can silence the siren locally by pressing the main button on the sensor. The alarm will continue to notify other team members until someone dismisses it in the app.
