Public Install for Minut sensors

Use the QR code for bulk installations of sensors

Written by Emilie Pain

The Public Install feature allows you to set up Minut Sensors quickly and efficiently using a QR code, without the need for logging in or using the Minut mobile app. This is particularly useful for bulk installations in short-term rental properties.

How It Works

Each Minut Sensor is shipped with a QR code on its packaging. This QR code links to a unique web URL that facilitates the installation process. Here's how you can use it:

  1. Scan the QR Code: Use any smartphone camera to scan the QR code on the Sensor's packaging. This will open a web page in your browser.

  2. Select a rental unit: The web page will prompt you to select a home from your organization where the Sensor will be installed. Only homes that already exist in your organization will be visible.

  3. Pre-enrollment: Once you confirm the home selection, the Sensor is pre-enrolled to that home. When the Sensor is powered on and connects to Wi-Fi, it will automatically complete the enrollment process without further interaction.

Important Considerations

  • Organization toggle: The Public Install feature must be enabled by an admin in your organization. If it's disabled, the QR codes will not function.

  • Rate limiting: The installation process is rate-limited to prevent misuse. This ensures that legitimate installers can complete their tasks without interruption.

  • Session expiry: Each installation session lasts for one hour. If the session expires, you will need to re-scan the QR code to restart the process.

  • Device eligibility: Only Sensors that have been shipped as part of an order can be installed using this method. Demo units or samples not associated with an order cannot be installed.

  • Rental unit selection: The feature only supports linking a Sensor to an existing home. It does not create new homes or configure Wi-Fi settings.

  • Security: The process is designed with privacy in mind. The QR code and session do not expose sensitive information like the full MAC address or organization ID.

Troubleshooting

  • Device not allocated: If you encounter a "device not allocated" error, it means the Sensor is not part of a shipped order and cannot be installed using this method.

  • Session expired: If your session expires, simply re-scan the QR code to start a new session.

  • Incorrect rental unit selection: Ensure that the home you select is the correct one for the Sensor. If you need to change it, you will need to restart the process.

New Features

  • MAC Suffix Confirmation: After scanning the QR code, the session creation response now includes the last 4 hex characters of the device MAC address as mac_suffix. This helps confirm that the correct device was scanned.

  • Session Invalidation: If the organization toggle is turned off during a live session, the session is immediately invalidated, ensuring security and control over the installation process.
